Legal & Documentation

The bureaucratic infrastructure of transition. Most transfeminine adults will, at some point, navigate court name-change petitions, gender-marker amendments on a half-dozen different documents, insurance fights, employer paperwork, and at least one border crossing. None of it is medically interesting. All of it is consequential.

This section covers the documentation processes themselves — how each system works, what the failure modes are, what to bring, and what to do when something goes wrong. It is not legal advice, and it does not substitute for a licensed attorney in your jurisdiction. The site explicitly does not name specific attorneys.

This is not legal advice

Information here is educational and route-finding. Laws change quickly — particularly US state-level law in 2026 — and outcomes vary by jurisdiction, individual circumstances, and timing. For consequential matters (custody, asylum, immigration, criminal exposure) consult a licensed attorney. Trans-experienced attorneys can be located through Lambda Legal, NCLR, TLDEF, A4TE/NCTE, GLAD, ACLU, or local LGBT bar associations.

How to use this section

What's not here

  • Specific attorney recommendations. Trans-experienced attorneys vary by jurisdiction, area of law, and individual practice; we link to advocacy-org referral networks.
  • Active legal advice. Pages describe processes and known variations; they do not constitute counsel for your specific case.
  • Real-time political tracking. US state-level law is shifting rapidly in 2026; pages flag VERIFY/STALE for content known to be volatile, but the canonical sources are advocacy-org trackers (Movement Advancement Project, Trans Legislation Tracker), not this wiki.
