Workplace Transitioning Playbook

This section is the operational chronological layer of transitioning while employed. It owns the timeline from "I am thinking about disclosing" through "I am 5+ years out at this employer or the next." It owns scripts, sequencing logic, system-rollout checklists, escalation ladders, and role-and-trajectory negotiation.

It deliberately sits next to — and does not duplicate — five existing layers:

Layer Lives in Owns
Legal records (payroll, I-9, transcripts, licensure) Legal → Employment & Education Records Records mechanics across decades
Anti-discrimination law and EEOC procedure Legal → Discrimination Statutes, agency complaints, litigation strategy
Workplace social fabric (ERGs, allies, trans co-workers) Community → Workplace Community The social environment around the trans employee
Day-to-day coping (pronoun registers, restroom calculus) Mental Health → Daily-Life Coping Recurring micro-friction across all settings
Trans-101 deflection scripts Community → Being Someone's First Boundary registers with cis curiosity
Operational transitioning at work (this section) workplace-transitioning/ The chronological playbook from disclosure-day-zero forward

The scope test for any candidate page: does the work happen operationally, chronologically, inside the employment relationship, on a timeline anchored to disclosure-day-zero rather than to a court order, an HR claim, or a community event? If yes, it lives here.

Anti-discrimination law sets a floor; protections vary sharply by jurisdiction

Federal Title VII protections under Bostock v. Clayton County (2020) are real but enforced unevenly, EEOC posture varies across administrations, and state-level protections range from explicit (CA, NY, IL, MA, WA, MN, NJ, CT) through silence to active hostility. Hostile-jurisdiction readers should treat Legal → Discrimination and Legal → US State-by-State Landscape as prerequisite reads before any operational disclosure step.

Audience

Currently employed (or imminently job-seeking) trans-feminine adults navigating disclosure at work or already mid-rollout. Pre-employment readers should read Mental Health → Coming Out & Relationships first. Self-employed and freelance readers should jump to Self-Employment & Freelance. Pediatric/adolescent workplace contexts (paper routes, summer jobs, internships under 18) are out of scope.
