Mental Health

Mental health is the load-bearing structure under everything else on this site. HRT, voice work, surgery — none of it works as well, or sometimes at all, when underlying dysphoria, depression, anxiety, or trauma are unaddressed. And conversely: every other section's content carries mental-health implications. Voice plateau drives despair; surgical recovery surfaces body-image issues; HRT mood-side-effects intersect with psychiatric medication.

This section covers what trans-affirming mental healthcare looks like, how to find it, and the topics that come up most. It is education and routing — not crisis support.

If you are in crisis right now

  • United States: call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline)
  • Trans Lifeline: +1-877-565-8860 (US) / +1-877-330-6366 (CA) — peer-run, trans-staffed
  • United Kingdom: call 116 123 (Samaritans)
  • International: findahelpline.com — locator for crisis lines worldwide

These are 24/7 services. Calling is free.

Where this section sits

Other parts of this site are about what to do (take a hormone, do a surgery, train a voice). This section is about the substrate that those changes happen on. A few practical notes on how to use it:

A note on what's not here

  • Pediatric and adolescent mental health is out of scope. The clinical picture, ethical framing, and political environment are meaningfully different and warrant dedicated resources elsewhere.
  • Crisis intervention is not provided here. Pages are educational and route to crisis lines, peer support, and licensed clinicians.
  • Specific therapist or clinic recommendations are not given. Trans- affirming care varies wildly by location and individual provider; this section provides vetting frameworks rather than directories. For directories see Resources.
